Zapier Alternatives for Commerce: Real Cost Comparison

Zapier's per-task pricing scales badly for commerce. Here's how Make, n8n, Activepieces, and platform-native automation compare on cost and capability.

01

Why Zapier becomes expensive fast

Zapier prices per task. A 'task' is one step in a workflow that does meaningful work. A workflow with 5 useful steps that fires 100 times a month uses 500 tasks. Their pricing tiers are $19.99/mo for 750 tasks (Starter), $49/mo for 2,000 tasks (Professional), $99/mo for 6,000 tasks (Team), and $299/mo for 25,000 tasks (Company).

For most commerce operators, this scales badly. A modest store doing 200 orders a month with a 4-step order-processing workflow runs 800 tasks a month before counting any other automation. Add a customer-signup flow, a refund flow, a Slack-on-big-orders flow, and you're past 2,000 tasks. That's $49/mo on Professional. Past 6,000 tasks (a fairly modest commerce operation), you're at $99/mo.

Compare to alternatives that don't charge per task, and the math shifts.

02

Make (formerly Integromat)

Make uses 'operations' instead of tasks but the concept is similar. Their pricing is roughly half of Zapier's per equivalent volume: $10.59/mo for 10,000 operations (Core), $18.82/mo for 10,000 operations with priority execution (Pro).

Stronger logic capabilities than Zapier — branching, loops, iterators, data parsing all native. The interface is more complex and less beginner-friendly. Best for operators who need conditional logic Zapier handles awkwardly.

03

n8n

n8n is self-hosted and open-source. No per-task billing. You pay for the server it runs on (a $5-20/month VPS handles most commerce workflow volume comfortably).

The catch: self-hosting means you maintain the server, handle updates, manage backups, and debug when something breaks. For technical operators or businesses with engineering staff, this is fine. For non-technical operators, it's a significant ongoing burden.

n8n Cloud (the hosted version) is $20-50/month with usage caps. Cheaper than Zapier at high volume, more expensive than Make at low volume. The self-hosted version is the option that makes economic sense for high-volume operators.

04

Activepieces

Open-source, MIT-licensed, similar UX to Zapier. Self-hosted is free; their hosted offering is $25-50/mo with usage caps.

The standout feature is no per-task billing on the self-hosted version. For commerce operators running 10,000+ tasks/month, that's $80-200/mo of savings vs Zapier.

Activepieces is also what Vertex Ordering uses under the hood for its native automation layer. If you're a Vertex tenant, the workflow canvas is included in your plan with no separate billing.

05

Platform-native automation

The cheapest option if your commerce platform supports it natively: workflow automation included in your monthly plan, no separate billing.

  • Vertex Ordering: native Activepieces canvas with 100-10,000 executions/mo depending on plan ($9.99-$39.99/mo).
  • Shopify Plus: Shopify Flow, included with the $2,000+/mo Plus tier.
  • BigCommerce Pro/Enterprise: native automation included.
  • Square: limited 'Square Automations' on the Plus plan ($60/mo).

How to actually pick

If your commerce platform includes native automation: use it. Always tighter integration than external tools.

If you're at low volume (under 1,000 tasks/month) across multiple platforms: Zapier or Make. Zapier wins on integration breadth; Make wins on price and logic flexibility.

If you're at high volume and want managed hosting: Make Pro or Zapier Team. Activepieces Cloud at the same price point.

If you're at high volume and willing to self-host: n8n or Activepieces. $5-20/mo server cost, no per-task fees, full control.
