Vertex Ordering vs Square

Square is everywhere. Vertex is everything.

Square's pricing is opaque and their modules charge for each addition. Vertex bundles storefront, POS, bookings, subscriptions, loyalty, and automations into one flat monthly fee.

Why teams switch

No per-module pricing

Square charges separately for Online, Appointments, Marketing, Loyalty, and Payroll. Vertex includes the equivalent of all of those in one plan, with no upsell at checkout.

Automation layer included

Square offers minimal automation. Vertex ships an embedded workflow canvas with 9,000+ app integrations and native order/booking triggers — no per-task billing.

Real storefront customization

Square's online stores have rigid templates. Vertex's drag-and-drop builder lets you place blocks anywhere, inline-edit text, and ship custom domains with one click.

Apex domains, free SSL

Square requires their Pro plan ($29/mo) for custom domains. Vertex includes Cloudflare-backed custom domains with automated TLS at Starter ($9.99).

Vertex Ordering is the right call when…

  • Businesses using 3+ Square products (Online, Appointments, Loyalty) — Vertex bundles equivalents into one plan
  • Operators who want a proper customizable storefront, not just a template
  • Anyone planning to layer subscriptions or automations
  • Teams comfortable with Stripe instead of Square Payments

Stick with Square when…

  • Solo operators who only need a free POS app and a Square reader
  • Businesses deeply tied to Square hardware (Square Stand, Register, Terminal)
  • Teams already invested in Square Payroll or Square Capital

No platform is right for every business. We'd rather you pick the right one than churn out in 6 months.

Common questions

Can I import from Square to Vertex?

Yes. Product catalog, customers, and order history export as CSV from Square and import cleanly. Bookings migrate via the Square Appointments export. Most single-location migrations take under an hour.

Do I have to use Stripe? I have Square Payments.

Vertex runs on Stripe Connect. You'd need to set up a Stripe account (15-minute application) and switch your payment processing. Your existing Square hardware (Stand, Reader) won't carry over since they're locked to Square's processing.

How does pricing actually compare in practice?

A typical Square user running Online, Appointments, and Loyalty is paying $29 + $0 + $45 = $74/mo (plus payment processing). The equivalent on Vertex is $19.99/mo (Growth). Both pay Stripe/Square's processing rates separately.

What about Square's POS hardware?

Square's hardware is locked to Square's processing. To use Vertex with in-person payments, you'd switch to Stripe Terminal hardware (Stripe Reader S700, BBPOS WisePOS E, or any iPad with Tap-to-Pay).
